Research and documented case work

One primary market study and three client engagements. Every record carries the period it was measured over, the method used to measure it and the figures in full. Revenue totals are left off, because a revenue number says more about the size of the company than about the work.

Denver Metro HVAC Search Visibility Study

A primary diagnostic study of local search visibility and Google Business Profile gaps across 319 operational HVAC contractors in the Denver metropolitan area. Five commercial queries were measured from a 25 point geographic grid, through position 40 where results were returned, then deduplicated into a population of unique operational listings.

Method and scope, as collected.
Market Denver metropolitan area, including Denver, Aurora, Lakewood, Arvada, Westminster, Littleton, Centennial and Thornton
Collection date September 2, 2026
Population 319 unique operational HVAC listings discovered across the measured result set
Target queries HVAC contractor, AC repair, air conditioning contractor, heating contractor, furnace repair
Grid 25 geographic coordinate points spanning roughly 30 km by 30 km across the metropolitan region
Rank depth Listings evaluated through position 40 where map results were returned
Visibility definition Share of successfully measured grid points where a listing ranked in the top 20 map results
Sweep execution 112 of 125 planned coordinate-query sweeps completed, producing 853 observations
Failed measurements 13 sweeps timed out or were rate limited upstream (10 on AC repair, 2 on furnace repair, 1 on air conditioning contractor). Each percentage below uses the evaluated subset with complete data for that field.

Measured findings

  • 96.2 percent 307 of 319 contractors held under 20 percent metro visibility even for their highest performing measured query.
  • 70.1 percent 213 of 304 profiles had no appointment or direct booking link visible in the collected profile data.
  • 49.5 percent 147 of 297 contractors had fewer than 50 public customer reviews at the time of collection.
  • 36.5 percent 111 of 304 profiles had no description, or a description under 300 characters.
  • 36.0 percent 109 of 303 profiles had fewer than 10 photos visible in the collected profile data.
  • 18.8 percent 60 of 319 listings had no active website URL attached to the primary map listing.

What the data suggested

  • Visibility dropped away sharply outside a contractor's immediate 2 to 3 mile operating radius.
  • Contractors without dedicated suburban service pages rarely appeared in neighbouring communities beyond their own zip code.
  • Missing booking options and thin profile descriptions appeared alongside the lowest visibility scores.

Boundaries of the study

The dataset is a point in time snapshot of 319 operational listings collected on September 2, 2026. Local rankings move with searcher proximity, search intent, competitor changes and algorithm updates, so these findings describe market configuration patterns rather than a single ranking factor. Google's own guidance is that local results are evaluated on relevance, distance and prominence.

Documented case, cabinetry

Custom cabinetry and joinery workshop

Unnamed at the request of the business

A workshop with no website, an unverified map listing and referral-only enquiries, carried through profile work, a mobile-first site and quote forms, then tracked for 6 months.

Starting point

Zero website presence, an unverified map listing, and total reliance on personal referrals for new project enquiries.

Work completed

  • Google Business Profile configured and verified against custom cabinetry and joinery categories.
  • A mobile-first website with clear service information, click to call actions and project enquiry forms.
  • Services and service areas connected through on-page copy, internal links and matching structured data.

Attribution method

Inbound enquiry volume and consultation conversion were tracked over a 6 month initial post-launch attribution period. An enquiry was counted when it was a direct phone call from the listing lasting over 60 seconds, or a completed custom project quote form submitted through the website.

Documented outcome

  • 9 Average monthly inbound calls and qualified project enquiries generated from local search.
  • 3 in 5 Qualified consultations converted to signed workshop projects during the 6 month window.

6 month attribution window. Calls over 60 seconds and completed quote forms counted as enquiries.

HVAC, Denver metro

Ridgeline Heating and Air

Aurora, Colorado

A 14-truck HVAC company with a claimed profile, no suburb pages and a booking path three taps deep. Profile rebuilt, six pages added, ads restructured by intent.

Starting point

A claimed but unverified profile with 34 reviews at 4.6, ranking between 8th and 14th for furnace repair and AC repair across most of the measured grid, no pages for the three suburbs it actually served, and an enquiry form below a photo gallery.

Work completed

  • Profile rebuilt and reverified: categories corrected, services and service areas set, 62 job photos added, booking link placed on the listing.
  • Six pages built and published: furnace repair, AC repair, heat pump install, maintenance plans, plus two suburb pages.
  • Review request added to the invoice email and the handover checklist after every completed job.
  • Ad account restructured into four intent campaigns with 180 negative keywords and call assets on all of them.

Attribution method

Map pack positions read from the same 25 point metropolitan grid used in the Denver study and re-run monthly. Calls counted with a tracking number on the listing and the site; forms counted as enquiries on submission.

Documented outcome

  • 41 Inbound calls a month from local search at month 6, up from 12 at the start.
  • 4 of 5 Measured searches with a top 3 map pack position at month 5, up from 1 of 5.
  • 92 Public reviews at month 6, up from 34, at an unchanged 4.7 average.
  • $94 Cost per booked job from Google Ads at month 6, down from $212 in month 1.

6 month attribution window. Positions from a 25 point grid re-run monthly. Calls over 60 seconds counted.

Roofing, Fort Wayne

Northline Roofing and Exteriors

Fort Wayne, Indiana

A roofing company working from a Facebook page and a door-knocking calendar. First website, corrected map category, review routine, and ads on storm and repair intent only.

Starting point

No website at all, a map listing carrying the wrong primary category, 11 reviews, and every enquiry arriving by word of mouth or from people knocking on doors after a storm.

Work completed

  • Mobile-first site built with four service pages, a financing section and a storm damage claim explainer.
  • Primary category corrected to roofing contractor, service area set to 14 towns, and the listing connected to the new site.
  • Review request sent after every completed roof, with a reply on every review within two working days.
  • Google Ads limited to storm damage, roof repair and roof replacement intent, with call assets scheduled for staffed hours.

Attribution method

Quote form submissions and calls over 60 seconds counted as enquiries. Each signed roof recorded against the lead source that produced it, tracked over the first 5 full months.

Documented outcome

  • 26 Quote requests a month at month 5, up from 4 in the month before launch.
  • 74 Public reviews at month 7, up from 11.
  • $68 Cost per quote request at month 5, down from $201 in month 1.
  • 19 of 31 Signed roofs in the tracked period that came from search rather than door knocking.

5 month attribution window on signed work. Calls over 60 seconds and quote forms counted as enquiries.

Tree service, Lexington

Heartland Tree Care

Lexington, Kentucky

A tree service with a verified profile, six photos and one page of website. Services and service areas set, town pages added, storm page, and ads on removal intent only.

Starting point

A verified profile with six photos and no services listed, ranking outside the top 20 for tree removal and stump grinding across the service area, a single page website, and no call tracking of any kind.

Work completed

  • Services and service areas added to the profile, 40 photos uploaded, and a weekly posting rhythm started.
  • Three service pages and four town pages built, plus an emergency storm page with the after hours number.
  • Call tracking number placed on the listing, the site and the truck signage.
  • Google Ads limited to tree removal, stump grinding and emergency storm work, with job seeker terms blocked.

Attribution method

Map pack positions read from a 16 point grid across the service area and re-run monthly. Calls over 45 seconds from the tracking number counted as enquiries.

Documented outcome

  • 33 Inbound calls a month at month 4, up from 7.
  • 13 of 16 Grid points with a top 3 position for tree removal at month 4, up from 5 of 16.
  • 22 New public reviews in 4 months, taking the profile from 18 to 40.
  • $1,180 Average search sourced job value at month 4, up from $640, as removal and emergency work replaced small pruning jobs.

4 month attribution window. Positions from a 16 point grid re-run monthly. Calls over 45 seconds counted.

Standards

How evidence is published here

These rules apply to everything published on this site, including the records above and the monthly reporting sent to clients.

Label the evidence

Research, documented client work and general practice are kept apart, so the basis of a statement is never ambiguous.

Show the denominator

Every percentage carries the count it came from. Data that could not be measured is never treated as a negative.

State the method

Grid size, attribution window and the rule used to count an enquiry travel with the figures they produced.

Measure business outcomes

Qualified calls, form submissions, consultations and booked work are counted ahead of traffic estimates or a single keyword rank.

Date the numbers

Collection dates sit with the figures, so a snapshot is not read as a current fact.

Keep the precision

Reported figures, calculation subsets and attribution periods match the underlying records, without rounding up.

Individual market outcomes vary with competition, trade and service mix, and local rankings move with proximity, competitor changes and algorithm updates. Figures describe what was recorded over the stated period, not a forecast.
